3D scanner Optical RevEng QUAD
Optical RevEng QUAD is an optical 3D scanner
with two pre-configured scanning areas. It allows different operations such as
surface acquisition, automatic and shape based alignments, mesh generations; all
this and still be flexible to use ,simple and relatively low cost. This line of
scanners allows the configuration of two different scanning fields: this enables,
by duly selecting the field, to obtain detailed scans of small objects or wider
and faster ones in the case of large objects; it also possible to perform acquisitions
of the same object with the two fields, thus obtaining, if necessary, some details
more accurately. The ranges of the two fields are decided when the scanner is purchased
according to its destination. This product is for consumers who need to digitize
objects of variable size, but nevertheless want a product which is simple to use.

Point cloud production
The 3D scanning process quickly produces a thick point cloud which
is the first digital representation of the object, the points forming the cloud
belong to the scanned surface and they represent it volumetrically. With every
acquisition, a point cloud is generated containing only the portion of the object
framed by the scanner: by repeating the procedure, the whole object will be composed.
Point clouds alignment
Only one acquisition is not enough to obtain a whole representation of the scanned object: therefore, different portions of the object will have to be scanned and then the resulting clouds will have to be aligned in order to compose the total volume. The software supplied with the Optical RevEng 3D scanner utilizes for alignment the automatic recognition of markers duly placed on the object surface. During the acquisition of each view of the object, the markers are identified and placed in correspondence with those that might be present in previous images; using these correspondences the software roto-translates each scan referring to those already acquired. The object is then formed easily and automatically. When the object is not suitable for the use of markers, as it happens with art forms or very minute objects, the alinement's based on shape is used, this solution, as the name itself suggests, interlocks the different acquisitions using the highly detailed geometry of the object itself. Moreover, the greater number of details makes this technique more accurate.
Polygonal model STL
Once the alignment is terminated the software we have developed is capable of transforming the acquired point cloud into a triangle mesh. The STL mesh is a standard file that can be already used with number control machines or with fast prototyping systems; it can be the input of finished elements analysis, too. The software supplied with the 3D scanner also allows editing of the mesh by applying smoothing techniques, hole filling, section extracting, the creation of planes, the creation of symmetry planes, best fit and improving of contours.
